Water damage restoration to antiques

24 July 2010

It often happens, that water damages antique furniture, whether because of an overflow from the flower pot, or from the water that reaches the antique due to poor protection from the elements, or various types of domestic incidents, spills, leaks and so on.

It’s one of the most common damages that occur to antique furniture.

If the water is immediately removed, damages can probably be limited to the finish, if any, depending on the finish and the length of time that the water stayed on the funriture.

If the water has time to penetrate, it could cause warping to the wood, which can be very difficult to repair and possibly irreversible damage.

It’s therefore critical to remove the water immediately with any type of assorbing material, towels, paper towels, even toilet paper if it’s handy.

Don’t use hair dryers to speed up drying, as you could speed up and worsen warping. Just keep wiping of water ’til the surface is dry enough that you can’t get anymore water off it. Then put it in a dry room, or where there is a dehumidifier, A/C works as well.

Then you can head to a water damage restoration professional in better spirits because damage was limited.
